About me
Hi, I’m Joey Zhu—someone who believes life is best lived with passion, optimism, and a sense of adventure. Whether it’s exploring uncharted waters or building bridges between people and ideas, I try to bring energy and enthusiasm to everything I do.
When I’m not diving into geotechnical research (or literally diving—I’m an AIDA II free diver who hasn’t touched the water since certification), you might find me trying something completely new. From skydiving to flying a propeller plane, I love chasing experiences that challenge and excite me.
Beyond my personal adventures, I’m deeply committed to my community. As President of the NSW Chinese Student Association, I’ve organised cultural, career, and sporting events that bring people together and create lasting connections. Supporting others and fostering a sense of belonging is as fulfilling to me as the thrill of any new adventure.
Before fully committing to the association, I was actively engaged in local community volunteer service, participating in exciting local events such as the Camp Gallipoli on ANZAC Day in 2016, and Australia Day in 2019.
And yes, there’s a story behind why I chose “Joey” as my English name. You can find the full story on another page if you’re curious!

Academic Achievements and Research Contributions
My academic rigour is demonstrated through my publications, including:
- Journal articles in Acta Geotechnica, Plant and Soil.
- Two conference papers presented at the 14th Australia and New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics.
I was the runner-up at the university level for the Three Minute Thesis international competition in 2021, highlighting my ability to distil complex research into compelling narratives. With three additional journal submissions underway, I am steadfast in my commitment to advancing understanding in my field.
I have actively promoted my research through interviews, including with Engineers Australia, and several other media features on my doctoral research in root-soil reinforcement. More can be found on this page. Furthermore, my research impact within industry sectors is expanding, supported by a grant through the Base Program by Crux Innovation. This award fosters stronger links between academic research and practical industry applications.
